But local AI needs a unified, low-latency view of all devices. It needs to know the state of every sensor, every switch, every thermostat across the entire home. Fragmented Thread networks provide a fragmented view. The AI agent can't see the whole picture, so it can't make intelligent decisions.

This is not just a network problem. It's a data problem. The AI needs a global, consistent data layer. Fragmentation destroys that.

I've seen this pattern before in DeFi. Protocols promise composability โ€” the ability for any application to interact with any other application. But in practice, liquidity fragments across chains, and composability breaks. The result is a market where the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

The Contrarian Angle: Fragmentation Is the Business Model

There's also a technical debt angle here. The Thread Group split the spec between 1.3 and 1.4, meaning older border routers may never support the unified fabric model. This is standard-level technical debt. The solution to fragmentation โ€” Matter 1.6's Joint Fabric โ€” requires upgrades across the entire chain: controllers, border routers, and devices. That's a multi-year process, and it won't be backward compatible.

Code is law, but liquidity is truth. In the smart home, the truth is fragmentation. And the smart money is betting on the tools that make sense of the chaos.
